Text:
In this interdisciplinary research project, dynamics and equilibrium states of open
quantum systems are examined mathematically. Important classes of models are given by
systems in quantum optics (e.g. laser), nuclear spin resonance and superconductivity.
The dynamics of an open quantum system originates in the interaction of the open
system and its (in general) stochastic environment ("heat bath"). For its description
the usage of operator algebraic methods, especially those of quantum probability,
is indispensable. One of the most important directions of research is to
reconstruct the nature of the interaction and of the environment from the dynamics
of the open system which is accessible for observation.
This is a joint research project with the group of Prof. Rieckers at the
Institute of Theoretical Physics.
